Who’s a 1st round draft pick in the WNBA (Woman’s National Basketball Association) and had a record breaking 34 point WNBA debut game? That would the Los Angels Sparks star forward, Candice Parker.
She attended Naperville Central High School with her brother Anthony Parker who is currently a guard for the Cleveland Cavaliers. She graduated in 2004 but not without leaving memories at her school. Her team went on to become champions in 2003 and 2004.
Candice played on the Tennessee Volunteers which is the woman’s basketball team for University of Tennessee. Her first year there she won the south-eastern Rookie of the Year award which helped her team win the 2006 SEC Tournament Champions. In that game with 17 seconds on the clock she hit a game winning clutch shot and earned her the tournament MVP. In all her time on the Volunteers there record was 101 wins and only 10 losses.
After Candice’s time at Tennessee she got drafted in the first round of the WNBA draft by the Los Angels Sparks. In Candice’s debut game she scored a record breaking 34 points breaking the previous record set by Cynthia Cooper who scored 25 in her first WNBA game. At the end of the season she became one of the most well known WNBA players of all time. She also amazingly won WNBA Rookie of the year and WNBA MVP that year.
Candice was selected to play for the U.S.A team in the 2008 summer Olympics at Beijing. U.S.A went on undefeated to take home the gold.
